See the Buda Hills on bike

To choose Buda for a day

The main contrast between Pest and Buda is that the latter is greener, quieter, prettier, and more residential. The Buda Hills are a low mountain range of numerous hills which dot the Buda side of the Hungarian capital, including Gellért Hill, Castle Hill, Sváb, János, Széchenyi, Márton and Sas Hills. It is an ideal area for cycling.

Gellért Hill

It takes about 1 or 2 hours to cycle up Gellért Hill from the city center. You’ll be rewarded with some of the greatest views of the city from here. If you stop half-way you have the chance to visit the Church in the Rock. On the top of the hill stands the Citadel which used to be a fortress, but now it just hosts museums and their exhibitions. In front of it stands the Statue of the Liberty, which is a memorial from 1945 when the Soviet Army came to Budapest to liberate us from the Nazis. There are trees all around, and a grass area, so you can easily enjoy some drinks here – even a picnic.

Normafa

The next stop on your trip should be the famous János Hill. It is a bit further, but the hill is even higher and the ride more enjoyable. Start from Széll Kálmán tér where you can take the steep route up to the top until you reach Normafa. It is a well-known place to just about everyone living in Budapest. Youngsters and adults all enjoy the beautiful scenery, the fresh air and the panoramic view at 477 meters high.

You can have a tasty lunch in the surroundings; there are several cute little restaurants around.

János Hill and Erzsébet lookout

Continuing from Normafa it’s a long but worthwhile ride to the top of János hegy. It is the tallest of the Buda Hills, standing at 528 m. There is a tower on the top called Erzsébet Lookout. From here you can admire an imposing panoramic view of Budapest.

Castle Hill

During the afternoon, if you are planning to cycle up Castle Hill, cross the Chain Bridge then take a right on Hunyadi Street which leads you up to the top. You will have a great view of the Fisherman’s Bastion, even from below. Spend some time cycling around the Royal Palace and then check out Matthias Church. Have a look over to the Pest side as well –  if it a clear day, you can see Margaret Island and even the Pilis Mountain. Enjoy your ride!
