Check Out Zakrzowek Lake
Looking to find a little spot near Krakow that almost no tourists visit? If your answer is “Yes!” then let us let you in on a little tip – Zakrzowek Lake.
Just a 20 minute walk from Wawel Castle, Zakrzowek Lake is man-made, sitting in what was once a mining quarry. Don’t let the man-made label put you off though. This lagoon is a veritable oasis of calm and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown.
For the history buffs among you, it may interest you to know that the area was a hangout spot of Kraków’s legendary alchemist and occultist Pan Twardowski. Apparently he had a workshop hidden in a cave here. Look around and see if you can find some clues to its whereabouts!
We should also let you know that technically, it’s officially prohibited to go – however you’ll have no problems getting access to the water and we’ve never heard of anyone getting into trouble with authorities. Keep in mind, however, if you get into difficulties while swimming there may be no one around to help.
What to do there
You can swim there – and indeed this is one of the most popular places to go in the summer if you’re looking for a natural cool off. Those of a brave disposition can also scramble up onto the rocks and jump off into the blue waters below. Just be sure to have someone on hand to take a photo!
There’s also a diving school operating at the lake, organizing dives between 7m and 21m. This’ll offer you a chance to see the various pieces of junk that call the lakebed their home.
Of course, if you don’t fancy getting wet, this is also the perfect spot for other things. Why not do some biking, running or an even just lounge around in the sun trying to catch a tan.
How to get there
The nearest transport stops are ‘Kapelanka’ and ‘Norymberska;’ and you can take tram 18 or bus 194 to get there. Of course, most taxi drivers know the place and will happily take your money for the 5 – 10 minute ride to get there from downtown (just be sure to follow the usual rules on taxis).
There’s also a Tesco nearby if you need to pick up supplies.
